Fitness and Fertility

Fitness and fertility are closely linked, as maintaining a healthy lifestyle through regular physical activity can have a positive impact on the body’s ability to conceive. This article will explore the impacts for both women and men, and why you should be exercising regularly if you’re trying to get pregnant.

HOW DOES FITNESS AFFECT FERTILITY?

According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, regular exercise is associated with improved menstrual function and ovulatory function, leading to increased fertility. Additionally, exercise can help regulate weight and body composition, both of which play a role in fertility.

A study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found that women who were overweight or obese had a significantly lower chance of conceiving compared to women with a healthy body mass index.

But men hoping for a healthy baby will need to stay in shape, too, especially if they want to ensure the best outcome. A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that men who engaged in regular physical activity had a higher sperm count and improved sperm motility compared to sedentary men.

Exercise has also been shown to decrease the risk of developing conditions such as diabetes and obesity, both of which can negatively impact fertility.

HOW MUCH, HOW OFTEN?

The American College of Sports Medicine recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise.

It’s important to find a balance and not overdo it, as excessive exercise can actually have a negative impact on fertility.

You already know the deal: regular physical activity can improve insulin sensitivity, regulate weight and body composition, increase sperm count and motility, and decrease the risk of developing conditions that can negatively impact fertility.

Now you just have to make the time to do it consistently, and execute!

Our 6-month ELEMENTAL CONCEPTION program includes twenty-four custom weekly workouts designed to meet you where you are, and to strengthen your body and mind for the challenges of pregnancy ahead.
