Does Acupuncture help with PPD?

Approximately 1 out of 7 women experience Postpartum Depression in the year after giving birth. With around four million live births happening every year, this equates to approximately 600,000 women per year suffering from Postpartum Depression. That number doesn’t include women who have experienced stillbirth, miscarriage, or who have adopted–unfortunately, these women can also suffer from Postpartum Depression.

The good news is there are ways to treat Postpartum Depression. The great news is that acupuncture is an extremely effective way to treat it. Acupuncture has a 90.7% total effective rate for treating Postpartum Depression. For comparison Prozac has a 90.5% effective rate for treating Postpartum Depression. The downside to Prozac, as with all medications, is that it can have side effects such as dizziness and loss of appetite, among others.

Pregnancy, childbirth and the year after a baby is born can have tremendous effects on the physical, mental and emotional health of a woman. Postpartum Depression is something that can be overcome with help. New moms and new families shouldn’t have to suffer when there are solutions that can make everyone’s lives happier and healthier.
